This year, we started a new summer tradition! My little preschooler absolutely loves school and was so heartbroken that it was out for the summer. So, I decided to come up with a fun way to give the kids something exciting to look forward to each week until school starts. I started with a pile of fun fabric scraps and turned them into this fun little drawstring bag:
When I started, I knew the exact kind of little bag that I had in mind and figured that someone else had probably beaten me to it. So, I decided to search for a tutorial and not only did I find what I was looking for…I found something better! Check out Dana’s Hobo Sack Tutorial…complete with lining and even ruffles if you wish! Perfect! I made mine a bit smaller and added a cute little bunting on the front…just couldn’t resist. (I seriously have an obsession with buntings lately!) Afterwards I filled it with 12 little activity cards…something fun to look forward to each week of the summer!
I gave it to my girlies today and they were completely excited. I read each little card to them and told them kind of what I had in mind. They kept cheering and giving me hugs and talking about how fun it was going to be. My oldest said she wants to do it every summer for the next 10 years! A girl who loves traditions, just like her mama! Finally, we drew out our first card…looks like it all starts this week with a Teddy Bear Picnic!
If you’d like to download the summer bunting cards that we wrote our activities on, just click on the image below.
The download is without activities so that you can come up with your own, but here’s the of activities that we included in ours:
- Prayer Walk
- Teddy Bear Picnic
- Ice Cream Picnic in the Park
- Tea Party Picnic
- Field Day Games
- Sandcastle Contest
- Water Play Day
- Backyard Drive-in Movie
- Stargazing
- Bedtime Stories Under the Stars
- Picnic Bike Ride
- Scavenger Hunt Hike
I’d love to hear what activities you include in your bag!

I love this project and mentioned it on my blog. Thanks.
So Cute! What is a bunting?
Thanks, Sherri! A bunting is just the little string of triangle flags that I decorated the outside of the bag with.
How I wish I had that gift or talent to spend with my kids! I pray for it and look for it.
Thank you for sharing!
Is there anyway that you would make another three bags to sale? I just love the bag and would love to give them as gifts! Let me know if this might be a possibility. Thanks!

Thanks, Jenny! I’m flattered that you are interested in purchasing the bags…and even a little tempted…but in this season of my life, I am really not interested in making things to sell. I have a lot of fun things on the horizon and just want to invest myself in my kiddos while they are little and still run to me every chance they get!
We made a poster of Summer Wishes. 25 items with a checklist. It’s tacked on the wall between the children’s room. So they can look at it and check off as we fill a wish. This idea you have though, would make a cute gift for someone with a summer birthday!
Thank you for this great idea! This would also be awesome for a Christmas present with activities to do throughout the year. We used some of your activities and added: Camp outside overnight, Go bowling, Paint outside, Swim in the pool, Go to the community center (they have a slide on their pool!) and Make S’mores. Now my 4 year old is whining because he wants to start right away LOL!
That is so cute! My 5 year old daughter is always asking, “What are we going to do today?” This would be perfect! thanks!
I’m with Jenny. Any chance you could make and sell me one of the bags?
Seriously. Please contact, if so.
LOVE IT!
LOVE this idea! This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for! I bought a bunch of those Daily Deals for fun places around our area and I’ve been keeping them secret this whole school year! Now I can reveal them in a REALLY fun way! Thanks!!
Anna @ Frugal for You, can you take a picture or share the 25 items of summer wishes? We are just about done with preschool for the summer and I want to make sure it’s going to be a great one!
I shared your idea on my blog today after I made the bag and cards. Now my server won’t upload my pictures! But I wanted you to know that I gave you credit!
Oh, that’s too bad, Jemma! I’d love to see the pics! You’ll have to let me know if you get them to load so I can check it out! Love the activities you came up with! My girls would love bowling and camping outside!!
Love this! Thanks so much for sharing!
I love this idea:) We have been making little tote bags to put in our shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child this year, so I will be making a couple more for my grandchildren for the summer! Thank you.
